Just because you own a camera...

Kirsty and Lee have gone with a sort of monkey/jungle theme in their nursery. So, instead of the usual baby decor (its Kirsty after all!) my daughter and I came up with the idea of decorating the walls of Bob's (Brotherston on Board) room with pictures of animals from St. Kitts. Somewhere during that conversation, I became a photographer!!!

Now, I should have known from my athletic abilities (or lack thereof) that just because you are enthusiastic about something doesnt mean that you are good at it. I may have once thought that I was Johnny Bower in my mind; I might still be able to play goal in Adam's mind and I might even be a photographer in Kirsty's mind- unfortunately I dont think that it makes me one. You would think that having obtained a medical degree by osmosis and successfully practicing it all these years would have satisfied me!..:-) But I am trying and the journey is allowing me to see some amazing things that I look very forward to telling BoB about some day. So here is my mini update.

I actually like this picture and I hope that it prints well. So far the goats have been the most accommodating. There was one goat with a gigantic "set" that the "boys" were paying homage to and I was being urged to photograph that one, but Kirsty and I had agreed that we didnt want this project to scar or scare poor BoB so I went with one that had a less impressive "pair!" lol

The next picture I attempted was the monkey. Up until about a month ago there was a tree just to the west of our unit and our balcony had become a "Flavorite" place for the monkeys to hang out.... but the tree has been cut down and we have moved in, so they have taken shelter in a tree that is about 20 more feet away, making it much harder to get a picture. I do love the fact that I get to see the monkeys but I am even happier that they much prefer to hang out at Scott and Heather's- Animal Drop In Center (and it is..btw! lol) because they confuse the term "drop in" with "droppings!"

Saturday morning I was sitting right where I am sitting now and I could hear a crunching noise outside..harder than a bird or lizard or any other small critter that has become part of my universe, but definitely not as heavy as a human. I went outside to investigate and saw about 10 monkeys playing in the "jungle" next to us. Of course as soon as I ran to get the camera, the word spread and they all took position in some sort of foliage. The only chance they gave me was to run from one tree, across an open space, to another tree. I am considering that this one is still a work in progress.....

Then on Sunday, I had one of the most exciting experiences that I have ever had in St. Kitts- something that I have only seen on tv. While we were at Cockleshell Bay (where Turtle Beach moved to, now called Reggae Beach), a nest of sea turtles hatched from a hole in the sand right behind us and there was a march of at least 100 turtles straight into the ocean about 20 feet away. It was the most amazing thing...not a single one went the wrong way... each one instinctively knew where they were supposed to go. A real life National Geographic show. Ok...maybe watching turtles is not exciting..perhaps fascinating was the word I was looking for-lol!

I love the next picture but I don't want BoB to be afraid of Shrek's hand in the picture before he/she even knows who Shrek is! I am hoping that when he/she finds out that it is only Calleigh's daddy showing him/her one of the baby turtles we saw that day, it will be a picture that brings joy and curiosity at the same time. Besides, the colours in Uncle Scott's shorts will brighten up the room!

So you see.. I am working on it. Next up is the donkey, the cow and the hopefully a lizard- so far only Wood Slaves have been coming around and they are too gray for the decor! Maybe by that time I will have improved on the animals that actually move and we can revisit the monkey and the one that I am dreading for its speed but a visit to Shipwreck should cure...the mongoose!

Who knows...maybe by the time BoB gets a brother or a sister, I could be a painter!

Don't be so hard on yourself! You were given a mission without an option to accept or decline. There are only 42 days left until the Estimated Arrival Date of BoB, so time is not on your side. Not to mention that we bought the picture frames already which mean you have... *cough*11*cough* pictures to produce.

No pressure. :D

P.S: The colours in the goat one are amazing. As for Shrek with the baby turtle.. that actually made me sad. Please tell me it made its way into the water!!

Of course he made his way to the water immediately after he had his picture taken- neither Uncle Scott nor Kadie would have had it any other way!!! Furthermore..even after the brief baby shot, he still beat at least half of his brothers and sisters :-)

How big are the frames? I am going to start forwarding the pictures and you can have them printed on your end...I think that will work best, dont you?

Have no fear... I am on this mission and will come up with the goods... but 11 different animals?? Give me some more suggestions!

Lee said that beach / palm trees / even water shots are acceptable! I've just realised something though... they need to be taken as portrait and not landscape. So tall, not wide. They are small frames. Only regular sized photos I think. They are IKEA frames.. the kind you can take the inside out and make the photo bigger!

As for animals... donkeys, cows, goats, pigs. Anything that doesn't have feathers really. Even a conch shell or a sand dollar. So long as there are no birds. BoB might be able to handle them, but I can't. If we knew that BoB was a girl I have great photos of the flowers at Pirates' Nest, but I'm not sure if a boy BoB would appreciate them as much!
